New IBM® BladeCenter® LS42 blade servers feature a new suite of AMD six-core processors for energy efficient computing:
- 2.6 GHz1 six-core AMD Opteron 2435 processor, including 3 MB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, and full 64-bit support (LS22)
- 2.4 GHz six-core AMD Opteron 8431 processor, including 3 MB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, and full 64-bit support (LS42)
- 2.6 GHz six-core AMD Opteron 8435 processor, including 3 MB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, and full 64-bit support (LS42)
- Two-way SMP processing (per socket) with a 1 GHz HyperTransport processor link
For memory-intensive applications such as database and virtualization the LS42 offer:.
- Up to 128 GB2 maximum system memory in an IBM BladeCenter LS42 (with addition of Multi Processor Expansion Unit option). Note that some offerings may have MPE standard; check configuration details.
To enable virtualization ease of use, LS42 offer optional embedded VMware ESXi 3.5 through an optional USB key.
More I/O options are available via:
- Broadcom 5709S dual-port Gigabit Ethernet connections with failover support on LS42
- Support for small form factor (SFF) or earlier Ethernet or Fibre Channel I/O cards, and Myrinet or InfiniBand expansion cards

The LS42 blade server offers the following new processors:
- AMD Opteron Model 8431 six-core processor with 3 MB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, and a speed of up to 2.4 GHz to help with energy efficiency
- AMD Opteron Model 8435 six-core processor with 3 MB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, and a speed of up to 2.6 GHz to help with energy efficiency
1 GHz and MHz denote the internal and/or external clock speed of the microprocessor only, not application performance. Many factors affect application performance.
