Product Description

Description

The HP StorageWorks 8/40 SAN Switch is ideal for organizations requiring a flexible solution that is forward and backward compatible and will meet rapidly evolving storage requirements, either as a small “building-block” switch for a departmental fabric or as a high-performance edge switch in larger core-to-edge SAN configurations. The 8/40 SAN Switch is designed for rapidly growing storage requirements in mission-critical environments - combining 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gb/s Fibre Channel technology in configurations of 24, 32, or 40 ports. A fully populated 8/40 SAN Switch with 40 ports enabled provides an aggregate bandwidth of 680 Gb/s. Inter-Switch Link (ISL) trunking can supply up to 64 Gb/s of balanced data throughput to reduce congestion and increase bandwidth. The 8/40 SAN Switch also enables organizations to use 4 Gb/s SFPs today and upgrade to 8 Gb/s SFPs when required.

Product features

Non-blocking architecture

Includes simultaneous wire-speed support for all ports to provide a high-performance system with aggregate bandwidth of up to 640 Gb/s full duplex.

Auto-sensing 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gb/s switch and router ports

Enables rapid deployment with minimal configuration in existing environments; provides the highest performance available, with complete backward and forward investment protection.

Ports on demand capability

Enables “pay-as-you-grow” non disruptive scalability from 24 to 40 ports for easy, scalable growth in highly dynamic business environments.

Full 1:1 subscription on all ports at 8 Gb/s

Simplifies SAN management, negating the need to map application performance requirements to port speeds.

Optional software for Integrated Routing, per-port routing option

Improves scalability and fault isolation on a per-port basis; delivers architecture flexibility, negating the need to deploy a dedicated routing platform or consume director slots.

Enhanced Inter-Switch Link (ISL) Trunking

Allows up to eight ports (at 2, 4, or 8 Gb/s speeds) between a pair of switches to be combined to form a single logical ISL with a speed of up to 64 Gb/s (128 Gb/s full duplex) for optimal bandwidth utilization and load balancing.

Dynamic Path Selection (DPS)

Optimizes fabric-wide performance and load balancing by automatically routing data to all available paths in the fabric.

Management

Single code stream supports the entire B-series portfolio, providing full forward and backward compatibility among B-series SAN switches and simplifying maintenance and software upgrades.

Adaptive networking

Advanced fabric services to optimize SAN performance and resource utilization.

Sixth-generation technology

Delivers low latency, power efficiency, and high reliability while providing a highly scalable and flexible platform for advanced fabric services.

Software overview

HP StorageWorks Power Pack+ Bundle (Optional)

The Power Pack+ set of tools monitors the network's health and performance. It includes Fabric Watch, Extended Fabric, ISL Trunking, Adaptive Networking, Advance Performance Monitoring, and Fabric Manager.

Fabric Watch (Optional)

Fabric Watch enables each switch to monitor the SAN for potential faults and automatically alert network managers to problems before they become failures. Fabric Watch tracks a variety of SAN fabric elements, events, and counters. Monitoring fabric-wide events, ports, SFPs, and environmental parameters permits early fault detection and isolation as well as performance measurement. Each switch in the SAN needs its own Fabric Watch license.

HP StorageWorks Fabric Manager Software (Optional)

Fabric Manager is a highly scalable, Java-based application that manages multiple switches and multiple fabrics in real time, helping SAN administrators with SAN configuration, monitoring, dynamic provisioning, and daily management of SANs. SAN administrators gain rapid access to critical SAN information across multiple personality fabrics, including Fabric OS SANs.

ISL trunking

For high performance enhanced Trunking, this optional license logically groups up to eight E-ports to provide a high bandwidth trunk between two switches. The switch operating system views the trunk as a single, high bandwidth resource (up to 64Gb) when routing connections between 8G switches. Connections are load-balanced across the individual links, which comprise the logical trunk group.

FICON support

Optional license which enable host control of switches in mainframe environments

Data Center Fabric Manager Professional

HP StorageWorks Data Center Fabric Manager Professional is a server based management application available at no-charge and comes with B-series SAN Switches and includes the following features:

Allows management of a single Fabric OS (FOS) fabric (up to a 1,000 B-Series switch ports) at a time

Performs group switch management beyond the scope of Web Tools

Does not offer management of the DC SAN Backbone Director or FICON

Data Center Fabric Manager Enterprise and Professional+

HP StorageWorks DCFM Enterprise and Professional+ are the enterprise-class products that support FOS and M-EOS products. HP DCFM Enterprise delivers unprecedented scalability, up to 24 fabrics and 9,000 switch ports, while HP DCFM Professional+ scales to 4 SAN Fabrics and 2560 switch ports.
